Not sure why I still let you get to me. Why do you have such control over my emotions. I try to separate myself. Be independent. Make my own choices. Live a healthy lifestyle. And yet you manage to make me feel so little. Vulnerable. Needy. Sad. Like that little girl who was never cared for properly. The child who just wanted to be noticed. Fed. Hugged. Why do I let you in so much. I am still somehow trying to fill that void. And I seem to be delusional and think you can do that. That you can step in and fix all that I am. That I feel. When it is most likely your fault to begin with.

Five Minutes
Have not been able to write in a long time. It has been many challenging months. Seems to be very difficult to get a break.
Eight surgeries since March and my body is just not responding well anymore. I have just been discharged from the hospital on Tuesday after twelve days and two painful surgeries.
This is not how I planned on entering another year. I was hoping to move forward. Finish school. Make something of myself.
And instead, the hospitalizations are getting closer and closer. Constant visits to the emergency room. Spending more time with the neurosurgery residents than my actual friends. One rolling vein after another. My body can't do it anymore. My mind cannot calm down.
All I want is to heal. To feel alert and alive. Be independent. Make my own choices. Be in control of my own body. To feel comfortable in any position. Be rid of this constant chronic pain. No more painkillers. To sleep.
No more. I have had enough. It's gotten to a point where I cry for my mother. Who have I become. This slobbering, pathetic person. Can't get my act together.
I whisper to myself throughout the day. Just get through the next five minutes.
My mind is constantly running. Mostly at night. When sleep should take over. Instead, the pain and the thoughts take over. Reminding me of how awful life is. Of all the pain. The things I cannot do.
I lay there for hours at a time dozing in and out of delirium. Imagining the worst. Dreaming and creating holocaust-like stories in my mind. Reliving memories that never happened. With people who are not here. Are not in my life. Or cannot even talk.
I think of my mother. A lot. And I cry for the parents I wish I had. The home I wish I could go to. A cocoon where I can feel safe. Loved. Taken care of.
I cry for my future. A future that felt so close. At the tips of my fingers. Slowly slipping away. I cry for my independence. I can't even take a shower on my own. My head is partially shaved. I am not myself. I cry for no reason at all. Being overwhelmed and exhausted should be enough of a reason.
That's all for now. I need to lay down.
I can make it through the next five minutes.
That's all that matters right now.
Five minutes.

What Are You Waiting For
Don't ask me for an update. If you really cared, you would just show up. I know that you have your own life. Wrapped up in your own world.
So far away. Four whole hours.
But seriously.
It is really hard for me to be understanding. Stay open-minded and positive. Your occasional message checking in. What are you waiting for.
A funeral.
Because it will happen one day. And then what. What will you feel then. Will you regret. All those times you did not bother to come. Those precious moments that you missed.
You can still catch that brief smile of recognition. It's not too late. But the clock is ticking. Decline is happening. And you are not here.
What are you waiting for.
Waiting for that phone call.
The phone call that will change all of our lives. Alter reality as we know it. And then you will show up. And be sad.
Mourning.
For this tremendous loss you feel. But never actually took advantage of the time that you did have. And did not bother to come and make a difference. You left it up to others.
Us.
Always our responsibility. Burden. Pain. Privilege. To care for. And hold. To feed. And cheer up. A lifetime revolved around. Affected.
In the end. We will have very little regret. Will feel pride and comfort. That we did all we could.
Almost.
That we were there.
And you will come and it will be too late. You will drop everything and finally show up. And it will not matter anymore. Because you missed out. Your loss.
And while it will be a loss for us. We will be consoled that our faces were recognized. Hands squeezed. Occasional name uttered.
We were always there.

Polar
Polar opposites
Two sides of
a coin
Day and
night
Sun and moon
One young
and the other old
The young
one is quiet. Often introspective. Thoughts flood her mind at all times. She is
mostly sad. Stuck in a past life. Forever reliving memories. She is 6 years
old. Wants to be held. To be heard. To be listened to. She is artistic.
Creative. A loyal friend. Would drop anything to be there for you.
The old one
is loud. A leader. A bitch. Take charge kind of gal. She has a hard shell.
Built a fortress around her heart. No one would dare enter. Giving up is not
option. She shows up. No matter what. Fights to lead a functional life. No one
can think she is weak. She is 80. Propelled into adulthood. Forced to be
mature. Make life decisions. She is a fighter. She will leave before you hurt
her.
One is mean
to the other
Telling her
to snap out of it
Not to fall
into the trap
Of life
Of love
The other is
sad
She is tired
Begging the
other to make things ok
To hold her
hand
Waiting for
a pain free moment
They are
polar
But perhaps
one day they could meet
Join forces
Unite
And form an
alliance

Cry for the Future
I am always so composed
Together
Hold my real emotions inside
The deep dark ones
That no one really knows about
Would scare them if they did
The ones that control me
That I think about day and night
No break
Control my every moment
Suffocate me
In silence
The cup is not full
Or Empty
There is no cup
It is missing
Today
I cried for the first time
In over a year
I cried tears
Real tears
Flinging around
Uncontrollable
My mother
Is in the hospital
Again
She will not open her eyes
Cannot hear me
Register I am in front of her
Holding her hand
Stroking her face
My tears are dripping on her
And she does not notice
My mother
Who I never visit
Never appreciate
May never wake up
And now it's too late
I may get my wish
And be an orphan
My father
Now he is another story
Does he even realize
He is suffocating me
Killing me slowly
Day after day
Year after year
Does he even notice me
He walks out of the room
As if I do not exist
I sit there
And I cry
I cry for the past
I cry for the present
And I cry for the future
Together
Hold my real emotions inside
The deep dark ones
That no one really knows about
Would scare them if they did
The ones that control me
That I think about day and night
No break
Control my every moment

an orphan with living parents
How do you write about something when you've been avoiding facing reality for so long. How do you open that wound that has been so neatly packed. Danced around for so long. What do you say when you don't think anyone is listening. And if they are, you know they can't handle what you have to say. What do you do when you are afraid of your own humanity. Your own reality. The power. The sadness. What do you do when the sadness takes over your life. Threatens to swallow you whole. Suctioned to another place. Six feet under. How do you verbalize those words. Capture those deep emotions. Where do you place that self awareness. How do you keep going.
I am an orphan with living parents. I am alone. I am surrounded by people but I am alone. My parents are living and breathing. But they are not here. They do not know me. They do not want me. They are selfish. They never really looked at me. Seen me for who I was. They used me. Abused me. And left me to rot. All I wanted was to be loved. To be welcomed. To be wrapped in their hearts and never let go. But they were distracted. Consumed. And I was left to fend for myself. I am left to pick up the pieces. Of my shattered soul.
You have abused your power. You were supposed to be there. Love me. Hold me. Guide me. You held the blueprints to the future. And instead you shunted my growth. You altered my reality. You forced me into roles where I did not belong. I took on everyone else's burden. But no one was there to protect me. You abandoned me. I am abandoned. And now all I feel is a void. An emptiness deep in my gut. That cannot be filled. You were supposed to be the parents. You were my example of how to navigate this complicated world. And you failed.
All I ever wanted was unconditional love. And support. And you couldn't even give me that. A basic need. My human right. Everything with you comes at a cost. A hefty price. Sanity is not an option. You don't care if I make it through the day. If I ever materialize to be something real. You have sucked me dry. Corrupted my thoughts. Controlled my mindset. Your voice echos in my brain. Saying nothing helpful. I lead my life in fear. Of others' knowing me. Of myself. Of never amounting to anything. Because you never believed in me. You didn't even give me a chance.
And now you have robbed me of my anger. The only defense mechanism left. There's no more hiding. Or avoidance. The truth has finally surfaced. Hit me in the face. You are toxic. You were never good for me. No matter how hard I try to find another conclusion. I can't. There is no choice. I can't survive with you in the way. You missed out on knowing me. Of being in my life. Of making a positive impact. I am an orphan by choice. Because although you are biologically my parents. You don't deserve the title.
I am an orphan with living parents. It's not something anyone wants to hear. It's not something I want to say. But I can hide from it no longer. I am an orphan with living parents.

passive nothing
Dear A
It’s very hard for me to write
this letter. To verbalize what it is I am feeling. But I feel that if I don’t
get it out, I might burst. I just don’t understand why you act different toward
me. Do you even notice? Do you feel the difference? Do you even notice that you
are avoiding me? That you are distant. Not around. Is it because of something I
did? I just don’t get it. Don’t you want to have a relationship with me? Why
shut me out? Do you feel happy? Coming home late and avoiding me? Making
Shabbos plans and not even including me? When is the last time you called me?
Texted me? Do you even notice? Do you know that sometimes I feel like an orphan?
All alone. No parents to turn to. That if something happened to me, they wouldn’t
even know. No relationship with any family. My siblings only call me when they
need something. And when I call them, they don’t have much to say. Why have I
always been there for you and for them and I can’t seem to get the same in
return. What happened to the backgammon games? Eating supper together? Shabbos
meals? The walks? The guitar lessons? We need each other. We have always been
there for each other. To bounce ideas on. Our days. I don’t understand what
happened? Are you mad at me? Do you feel happy in the way that things are?
Because I don’t. I have made effort a few times and you have pushed me away. You
are not approachable. You talk to everyone but me. And I am not ok with that. If
there’s something you want to say, then say it. This passive behavior is not
getting us anywhere. So here is me stepping out of myself. Reaching out to make
a change. I hope you take this letter to heart and make a change.
You know where to find me.
Your daughter,
R

The common denominator
Honestly. Yeah. It's obvious that you don't "get what that means." That I'm the crazy one. And yet, you are insensitive. Constantly insensitive. You have your life and I have mine. Right. And you all wonder why I stay away. Why I don't come around. Why I have secluded myself. Make it about you. So you're always the one who needs to be accommodated. What about everyone else. When do I ever factor in. Does it even occur to you. Have you even noticed me. My life. My lack of life. Do you even know what is happening. What I'm going through. Are you so wrapped up in your own life that you have no room to notice me.
I know I'm blowing this stupid, idiotic thing out of proportion. But it really bothers me. I feel like I'm always cutting people out of my life. And I know that it must be me that's the problem. I'm not delusional to think it's "everyone else." I know it's me. I know that I'm the common thread. The common denominator. I must be the difficult one. The problem. And yet I still feel that I've always been drawn to "difficult" people. That I can only connect with complex and complicated people. Others who have gone through challenges. And those that are basic and uncomplicated don't really last in my world. But then again, the difficult ones end up being pushed out. So who's left.
I've learned a very important lesson in recent years. One that I wish I would have understood years ago. Friends and maybe even people are not a given. A definite. Forever. They do not last a lifetime. Or better yet, it's ok for them to not last a lifetime. That doesn't necessarily say bad about me. It says it's reality. People change. Situations change. Life happens. And holding on to the past is not the healthiest or wisest thing. It can be damaging. Crippling. So I've let go of a lot people. And for certain individuals, it's caused me a lot of pain and heartache. I've obsessed about it. Had many sleepless nights. Felt very alone. But truthfully, I'd rather be alone than feel drained from others. Maybe that makes me sound depressed or severely introverted. Call it what you like. It's a defense mechanism. It's how I cope with this reality.
Problem with my way of life is that it's very empty and quiet. It's a self induced loneliness. No one to turn to. Talk to. Or hang out. No one to call me out on my stupidity or hang out with on a carefree day. It's an unwilling choice. I'm the one who limits myself. Creates this world that I cannot live in or seem to escape from. I've crippled myself.
It's a few hours before I turn one year older. And as usual, I have this feeling of doom. An underlying emotion of misery. What do I have to show for my life. Another year has passed. Nothing has changed. I have not moved. Haven't budged. Lost more people. Recreated the wall within myself. A blockade. An emotion-free life. No expectations. No feelings. Nothing. An emty shell.
Happy Nothing-Day.

The Truth Hurts
Hi S,
I'm sorry that I didn't respond and have not been in contact. It means a lot to know you are thinking about me. It's hard for me. I know that's not an excuse. As life has never been easy. For me. Or for anyone. Especially you. But it's definitely on the difficult side now and I am holding on by a thread. Therefore, it makes being "open" and "keeping in touch" very difficult. 1. I have nothing good to share and I try to avoid complaining. 2. I feel as if I have disappointed you. You have always seen the good in me and truly feel that I have all this potential. And I have flat out failed. I haven't accomplished. So it becomes easier to just keep to myself. To not reach out. It's a cop out. But it's less threatening. I'm not sure if anything I am saying is making any sense. I look around this life. Mine. Those around me. And I see pain. Sadness. It's pretty hard for me to relate to any happiness at this point. And that is a sad thing to admit.
Thanks for always being there.

A Response
I've thought a lot about what to write to you. I've wanted to respond for months. There's something stopping me. Pride maybe? I can't admit that my life is hell. I can't verbalize it properly. And I can't justify it or downplay things. That's what I would end up doing. I can't pretend that everything is ok. That I'm ok. I would be lying. I'm struggling and I can't ask for help. I don't know how. I refuse to admit defeat. I have to keep up appearances. The outside world has to think I'm strong. I must fool them all. The problem is that I couldn't fool you. I couldn't fake it around you. You saw right through me. And that scared me. And now I've taken too long. Let it go too far. And I don't know how to fix things. Repair a broken bridge. I think about it daily and yet I haven't done anything about it. Now what?

Do you know who I am?
I write because I might explode. If I don't get certain thoughts out of my head, I'm not sure what I could do.
I come to see you and you barely show emotion. No recognition on your face. You sit in your chair and refuse to communicate. Do you know I'm here. Do you know who I am.
You won't eat. You won't talk. Your family sits around you. Do you know who we are. Do you care. Do you realize that we have sacrificed our lives for you. Again. Constantly. Never ending.
Do you realize that the roles are reversed. Have always been. That I take YOU to the bathroom. Force you to sit down. That I'm the one putting a diaper on YOU. Then I lay in bed with you and hold you. As you sleep in my arms, taking up a third of the bed and whimpering in your sleep.
I wonder what you're thinking. Are their any thoughts in your head. Complete emptiness. Do you recognize me. Do you think I'm your mother. Are you used to me being your caretaker. Who else would do such things. Do you even know who I am. Do you trust just anyone. Are you slightly more comfortable with me.
And I try not to let my mind wander. No thinking allowed. Feelings are not ok. Shut down. Tucked in a little corner. In the back of my head. In a crevice in my heart. I cannot choose me. Never the first priority. Must be strong. And take care of everyone else. That is my destiny. It's why I was placed on this earth. For you. For them. This is who I am. I am the way I am because of you.
Do you know that. Do you know that you gave me life and then wrecked it. Do you know that I have nothing. Am nothing. For you. Because of you. Do you know. And now what. How long can this go on. How long can I fake this reality. This truth. Your truth.
When do I get to have a mother.

Don't worry, this is about someone else
When you hang up and realize how alone you are
When tears of desperation spring from your face
When your friends call you to babysit their kid so they can watch a movie
When your whole body hurts
When you can't be bothered to get dressed
When you wish you would die in your sleep
When you have your funeral planned
When there's no hope
When you are 80 years old
When you are everyone's rock
When you've stopped talking to everyone
When you have nothing left to say
When it all ends

you get what you deserve
When you're stupid
You suffer the consequences
End up alone
Withdrawn
A reminder
Of reality
Life hits you in the face
You are stupid
Ask for trouble
Self inflicted pain
No one else's fault
But your own
Cement your own destiny
Define what your life
Has become
You are stupid
Stupid
Stupid stupid
Unworthy
You deserve nothing
Pain and suffering
Brought on yourself
You will never
Be happy
Never be loved
Never be appreciated
You don't deserve
Deserve nothing
Only pain and misery
Self destruction
Sadness cloaked in numbness
Pain hidden in avoidance
Disappointment hidden in a smile
You get what you deserve
Lie in the bed you make
Buried in the grave you dig
No wonder he left
Everyone left
Everyone leaves
Because you don't deserve
You are unworthy
You are stupid
He deserves better
Better than you
Because you are a failure
You are bad
You deserve to be
Abandoned
Left
Hated
Neglected
You are stupid
One day
Death will be welcomed
A final peace
Quiet
Silence of the mind
Pain free
Stupid free
Life free
You are stupid
Stupid
You get what you deserve
The end

tell me why
Alone again. A constant thought. The house is empty. Just me and my dad. Seems so familiar. Like we've done this before. The past is revisiting. Dejavu. Takes me back to a few lifetimes ago. When it was just me and him against the world. Fighting to survive. Fighting to function. Mother unwell. Once again. Me the only child. I lay in my bed. I listen to him talk on the phone. Call after call. Lots of concerned people. Calls to lawyers. Calls to insurance companies. Even a painful call to the funeral home. Gotta be prepared. Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst. What is this life. How did we deserve this. What are we supposed to do. How are we expected to function. To survive. Why. She's in a locked ward. Old, decrepid people surround her. She is the youngest by many years. Someone please explain to me what's happened. How is this my life. Where is the happiness and joy. Where is the youth and the energy. Where is love. Contentment. Peace. Tell me where. Where is the family. How can I feel like an empty nester and I have never even given birth to a child. Tell me how. How is this my life. Don't I deserve better. Don't I. Is there anything left of this life for me. What about me. What will happen. How will I survive. How will I make it through. How will I pull through this life. How. Tell me.

Motherfree
She's back in the emergency room
Thinks the year is 1973
Not sure what happened then
Why that sticks in her mind
She thinks she's at "zaidy's house"
We don't have a zaidy
He rushes to her side
Once again
Just like always
Everything gets dropped
She is his first priority
I have wished her dead
Gone from my life
I have cursed her
I picture availus
Mourning
Motherfree
I am a bad person
Good Shabbos

Congrats
I sit here listening to Avraham Fried live
I'm reminded of all that I've lost
And all that I've given up
Of opportunities I'll never have
That I let slip between my fingers
That I handed over to another
More capable
More willing
Than me
I handed over on a silver platter
Ripe and ready
To live a life
I was not ready to live
I sit listening
To music of the soul
And feel the life I will never have
A life that goes on without me
Moving forward
Very quickly
While I stay still
Congrats on living the life you always wanted. Congrats on baby number two.
Dripping With Anger
Really?
You're gonna say that I'm a bad influence?
You're gonna put this all on me?
I'm to blame for your behavior?
Are you kidding me?
Who keeps this family glued together?
Who makes sure everyone is taken care of?
Who? Who?
Who steps in when you decide to shut down?
And what have you done?
You've shut yourself down
And you have the audacity to blame me!
Are you for real?
You can't even have a conversation
Instead you act like the toddler that you are
Avoid the people in your life
Your allies
Your support system
Have I not been your sounding board for the last who knows how many years?
Have I not been the mother for your children that they never had?
Have I not stepped in for the wife that you never had?
Have I not been through hell in back and dealt with it alone?
Without parent
Without support
Without love
Alone!
Do you even know what I've been through?
What I've overcome?
Who I was and who I have become?
Do you know me at all??
I'm a bad influence? Really?!?
